Ave maria, virgo virginum
Composer: Anonymous (s.a.) c. 1250
The rondelli ("round-songs", = a modern term) are a sort of
repetitive refrain-songs that you find in some medieval liturgical manuscripts,
but where you find them, there are usually a lot of them. So they are liturgical
and were popular, but there is no contemporary account of where or when or how
they were used. Perhaps it was for processions, perhaps for dancing in the
church, perhaps for extra-liturgical gatherings. (expl. by Thomas Hammer)
