Computer classes / Cyber Cafe.

Update August 2006

At this time,  only 4 computers of the original 8 in the computer room are still functional.
Of these 4, only 3 can connect to the internet.
There are no computer classes anymore. The cyber cafe is a bust.

Reasons for the high hardware failure rate:

Problem: Solution:
bulletExcessive heat.
bulletPROJIMO has installed an air conditioner for the computer room.
bulletDust.
bulletThe door and windows of the computer room are kept closed now.
bulletPower surges on electricity and data lines.
bulletSurge protectors have been installed on the power supply lines.
bulletThe data lines were not protected in a similar way, which in August 2006 resulted in a burnout of several network cards during one of the many electrical storms that occur so often in this time of year.

A difficult, and expensive, learning experience!

The cyber cafe was an attempt to recuperate (part of) the cost of investing in this useful technology.

A cyber cafe can be a good business idea in the right place and time, but without the knowledge and skills to maintain a computer network for themselves, the people in the project are not ready to make it succeed for that purpose.

Is this inappropriate technology? NO!
PROJIMO definitely has a use and purpose for computers.
bulletThe price is high, quite high in comparison to the Project's annual budget.
bulletThe advantages to the people of the project are immeasurable.
Internet access provides a window to the world that otherwise would not be available.

Furthermore:

bulletPROJIMO is heavily dependent on foreign visitors (Spanish classes and other) for revenue.
Most of these foreign visitors communicate by email and want to have email available while visiting.
bulletIn this changing world with global connections, electronic communication with donor agencies can be much faster and more efficient.

As the workers of PROJIMO learn from their bad experiences those special requirements to keep this high-tech, high-maintenance equipment  functioning, the usefulness of this equipment gradually increases.

Update January 2007.

Three of eight brand-new computers purchased with government funding.
The idea remains valid, and PROJIMO can in this way be a resource for the village people.
We hope that these computers will survive longer than the previous ones.
