Less than 10% of the gas stations will accept them.
As far as I know, no one in Coyotitan does.
The large chain stores in Mazatlan (Wal-Mart, Soriana) do accept
credit cards.
Traveler's checks: even worse.
About the only places where you can cash them at all is in large
banks, and even that may not be easy if you don't have an account in that
bank.
Do not expect that you'll be able to pay in PROJIMO with traveler's
checks.
The response to that is rather variable, from very reluctant to flat-out
no.
ATM:
I have been told that there is an ATM in San Ignacio. I have not
verified that for myself.
There are a lot of ATMs in Mazatlan, about 70km South of PROJIMO.
Either way, it's a long ways to go, and they usually limit what you
can withdraw in a single day.
Cash:
Is preferred by most businesses.
Many businesses and even banks will not accept US $100 bills. Too many
fakes in circulation.
Some are even refusing US $50.
As a general rule, do not accept US dollars as change, unless from a
bank.
Foreign exchange: There is an exchange post in Coyotitan near the Big Tree ("arbol
grande") on the main street. They do exchange US currency. The exchange
rate is slightly less favorable (+2%) than what you might get in
Mazatlan.
If you need anything above a few hundred US dollars, or other currencies,
you might prefer to go to Mazatlan to one of the larger banks.
Even so, many banks will limit the amount they are willing to exchange in
one day. (Banamex = $3,000)
