Driving in Mexico.
Some personal comments on driving to PROJIMO
from the USA:
| Having your own car available can be useful, especially if you would
like to visit the surrounding areas.
|
| Depending where you come from, it might even be cheaper than flying.
My cost (gas + road tolls) for a round trip New Mexico, USA - Coyotitan,
SI = + US$ 400.
|
| Gas prices are somewhat cheaper than in the USA, like US$2.50 instead
of $2.90/gallon
Bring cash. Less than 10% of gas stations will take a credit card,
almost none will accept traveler's checks.
|
| Top off the gas tank before you leave town.
Some of the toll roads do not have any gas stations for over more than 120
miles!
|
| Toll roads or "free" roads?
| Toll roads = generally well maintained, min. 4-lane with separated
opposing lanes, more direct, higher speed limit, less traffic, free
roadside assistance; BUT: more EXPENSIVE!
|
| free roads = mostly 2-lane roads without shoulder; winding, longer,
through every small village on the route.
A lot of truckers use the free route. There will be heavy opposing
traffic.
|
| Do not camp out or stop along the road, especially in
Sinaloa!
Robberies and worse are frequent occurrences in some remote areas. (e.g.
at the Coyotitan gas station!) |
Your choice will depend on your priority:
| Faster but mostly safer +++> toll roads. |
| If time is not a major factor, and you like to see the scenery +++>
free roads.
|
|
| Coastal vs. Central route?
| I live near El Paso, TX, so I can go either way and I have tried
both.
|
| I prefer the coastal road over Hermosillo -Guaymas - Los Mochis.
|
| Central route over Chihuahua - Durango:
