What (not) to expect when you visit PROJIMO:
3. PROJIMO is NOT Grand Central Station (anymore!)
| People tend to go about whatever it is they do at a rather sedate pace. |
| There are usually a few people around, and there is usually something
going on. |
| It just might not be the busy beehive that you are hoping for.
|
I have seen a few hectic days.
Like the one that a busload of people arrived without any advance
notice, with about 20 people on it, all of them amputees in need of at
least one artificial leg. Or like that day where the Culiacan "Club
Rotario" came to visit. That one of course was planned ahead, and people
were preparing for it for days!
Some other days were busy, in a more relaxed manner, like when there is a
party for the school kids of Coyotitan in the playground...
But do not expect a flurry of activity when you are here.
That may, or may not be, as from day to day, things can be very different.

After reading David Werner's books, some people might expect to
see all these things happening right in front of their eyes, and all within
the one or two weeks that they are visiting the project. Please, keep the
following in mind:
| David Werner's books are written as stories.
| These stories highlight key-moments of a process. |
| This process likely took weeks to months, and in some cases even
years.
|
|
| It is unlikely that you will see all of one such story if you visit
only for a short while.
What you will see instead are bits and pieces of many
different stories.
|
|
Quiet has its advantages
for some visitors.
| Smaller group, less people. You get to know everyone real quickly.
|
| More individualized attention is possible. e.g.
| in the Spanish classes, this may be a very important factor to learn
more in a short time span. |
| engineers (e.g. MIT students) can try out new ideas, and may have the
opportunity to build something that works, or doesn't work... :-)

If you would prefer a busier place, consider visiting
project Piņa Palmera
in Pochutla, Oaxaca.
Its management is organized differently, but
Piņa Palmera is
very similar to PROJIMO in many ways (one of PROJIMO's children...) and
has a lot more people...
