Comforts of Home?
Home Up Changing Looks Changing Technology Animals... Comforts of Home?

Do NOT expect all the Comforts of Home. (status Jan. 2007)

PROJIMO receives visitors from all over the world.
Depending on where you come from, things may be familiar, or NOT.

Accessibility in Mexico.

This is what the border between Mexico and the US will look like if Mr. Bush gets his wish!
= Problematic!

Oops!
= Not good!

Mexico does not have (much) regulation of accessibility. City life can be a nightmare for wheelchair users.

bulletCurbs are very high, with few ramps available.

bulletEven doctor's offices are sometimes on a second floor, with very steep and narrow stairs as the only way to enter.

bulletHandicap parking, if it exists at all, is more often than not occupied by non-disabled drivers.
There is little or no attempt at enforcement of the law that we have seen.

PROJIMO is a model of accessibility, compared to most of Mexico. There are ramps, wide doors, large rooms. Most work surfaces are at a comfortable height for wheelchair users.

However, the PROJIMO roads  can get very muddy and difficult to traverse in wet weather.

A muddy road. PROJIMO's potholes aren't quite that deep.

Safe Drinking Water.
The village water supply is intermittent, and NOT recommended as drinking water.
bulletThe supply line is usually pressurized between 7AM and 3PM, and between 5PM and 10PM.
Because of this, many people have a reservoir; either on their roofs ( = gravity pressure), or somewhere near the house with a pump of their own.

bulletSafe drinking water is available. Several stores in town sell the 5-gallon bottles with filtered water.
Two suppliers of filtered water come to PROJIMO several times a week.
KEEP THE BOTTLES CAPPED when in use, or mosquitoes will find them and will breed in them!

bulletThe Coca-Cola Depot is only a 5-minute walk away.
The truck comes to the project at least twice a week with various  soft drinks and bottled water.

Sanitation:
Shower in Casa Marielos.

Coyotitan does have a good sewer system. The PROJIMO development is connected to that system.

The people of PROJIMO build large bathrooms with open showers because of accessibility needs.

Flush toilets
are available,

Plumbing or fittings aren't always in good shape.

Garbage Disposal.

The PROJIMO people use small buckets and open barrels to collect the garbage.

The Coyotitan garbage truck comes into the project 2 or 3 times per week.
Everything goes to the city dump, a few km up the road towards San Ignacio, without any attempt at garbage separation or recycling.

The project could easily improve its appearance with a few large trash containers with a strong lid.
It would prevent cattle or dogs, cats and chickens from spreading the garbage all over the place.
It would also reduce the clouds of flies that are attracted by and/or breed in the smelly stuff.

Paved Streets.
Most Mexican villages do NOT have paved streets.
In this aspect, Coyotitan is almost an exception.
Most of the streets in Coyotitan are paved with asphalt or cobble stone.

PROJIMO does not have paved roads, and it does get messy when it rains.

Most of the streets in Coyotitan are paved .

Traffic:
1 word: BEWARE!

Alcoholism, Drugs, Domestic Violence.
Hopefully not a "comfort of home."  Most certainly a problem in the neighborhood.

Modelo and Pacifico, the two major beer brands in Mexico have a "deposito" even in the smallest villages.
Beer consumption is enormous.

Drunk driving is a major cause of death and disability in Mexico.

Save water! Drink Beer!!   Alcoholism is a serious problem in Mexico.

Ajoya is on one of the major trafficking routes for illegal drugs.  Coyotitan seems to be spared the worst excesses so far.   Drug dog.

Domestic violence is fairly common in Mexico, but is often not taken very seriously by authorities. Domestic violence is not uncommon in Mexico.
