Charles
John HarGitt,
at his residence, 84, Upper Grosvenor Road, Tunbridge Wells, on August 31,
aged eighty-five. Bom in Edinburgh in 1833, the son of a well-known
pianist and composer, Mr. Hargitt studied
under Halle, Macfarren, and Miller, and was organist of St. Mary's R.C.
Church from 1855 to 1862, being also founder and conductor of the
Edinburgh Choral Union. He made his home in London in 1862, and was
connected with the Royal Albert Mall Choral Society as deputy conductor
for Gounod. He was choir director of the Jesuit Church, Farm Street, for
eleven years, and did much for church music. His compositions include an
opera ('Coronet or Crown'), two operettas, a cantata ('The Harvest
Queen'), and numerous part-songs and motets. His song, 'The Mitherless
Bairn,' was at one time very popular, while he also composed some fine
hymn-tunes. In 1904 he retired to Tunbridge Wells, where he lived for the
past fourteen years in the highest esteem. |
