Stephen Spies was first exposed to
music before he could walk. His mom’s Latin American chorus, “The La Pena
Chorus”, would hold rehearsals at his house and, although he couldn’t talk
yet, he would attempt to sing along. He started violin at the age of 4, but
it wasn’t until he went to the Crowden School of music, and began the John
Adams composition program, that he began seriously composing music. He fell
in love with silent film and enjoyed composing and improvising music for
silent films in front of large audiences. In high school, he won the Adorno
ScoreXchange Composers Competition, the NACUSAsf (National association of
Composers USA San Francisco) 2009 Student Composer Competition and the Palo
Alto Youth for Youth composer competition. Most notably, he won the Orlando
Philharmonic Young Composers Challenge giving him the rare opportunity to
hear his symphonic work, played by the Orlando Philharmonic, as a junior in
high school. He won this competition again as a high school senior. He has
written music for a few independent films and is planning to pursue a career
in film music. Currently, he is studying composition at the San Francisco
conservatory of music with composer David Conte. He will be studying
composition/music theory in the EAMA (European American Musical Alliance)
program at the Schola Cantorum in Paris this summer and attending UCLA
(University of California Los Angeles) as a composition major starting this
fall.
