RITTER, FREDERIC LOUIS
born Strasburg Spanish origin family name Caballero June 22 1834, still
living 1890
Composer and musical writer, pupil of Hauser and Michel Schletterer and
later Paris of Georges Kastner After two in Germany he returned in 1852 to
France and became professor of music in the Protestant seminary at
Fenetrange Lorraine
In 1856 he went to the United States after several years residence in
Cincinnati where he organized the Cecilia choral the Philharmonic orchestral
Societies did much to advance the cause of music, moved in 1861 to New York
and conductor of the Sacred Harmonic Arion Choral Societies
In 1867 he organized and conducted the first musical of importance held in
New York and the same year was appointed professor music at Vassar College
Poughkeepsie whither he removed in 1874 In 1878 degree of Mus Doc was
conferred him by the University of New York Vocal Psalm xxiii female voices
op 8 Psalm xcv female voices with organ op 14 Psalm iv ban tone solo chorus
orchestra Psalm xlvi soprano solo chorus and orchestra O salutaris baritone
and organ Ave Maria mezzo soprano solo and organ Hafis cyclus of
