Ave María
Þú blíða drottning, bjartari en sólin,
þú biður fyrir lifendum og dauðum.
Hríf um eilífð oss frá heljar nauðum.
Ave María! Gef þeim himnesk jólin.
Bið þinn son að vernda oss frá villu.
Í veröld eru margir stígir hálir.
Um eilífð vernda allar látnar sálir.
Ave María! Frelsa þær frá illu.

Ave María
Thou gentle Queen, brighter than the sun,
you pray for all, the living and the dead,
for all time from power of hell redeem us.
Ave Maria! Grant us peace at Christmastide.
Implore thy Son to guard us from erring.
The world lays snares for the feet of the unwary.
Guard for ever the souls of the dead.
Ave Maria! Redeem them from evil.

Kaldalón fjord and composer Kaldalóns
The composer Sigvaldi Kaldalóns (1881-1946) is one of Iceland´s most
admired composers. Kaldalóns was a doctor in the Nauteyrarhreppur parish,
one of the remotest regions in the country, in the years 1910-1921. He
resided in the farm Ármúli, near to the Kaldalón fjord and took the name
Kaldalóns from that fjord. During his stay in Ármúli Kaldalóns composed many
of his best known songs (that have recently been published), like
Hamraborgin, Ég lít í anda liðna tíð, Þú eina hjartans yndið mitt and more.
The origins of these songs are the intent of the exhibition together with
the routes of the doctor Kaldalóns across Kaldalón and over the glacier
Drangajoekull. The nature and landscape in Ísafjardardjúp bay play a big
role in the compositions of Sigvaldi Kaldalóns. |
